Cherry shaker step stool in process

Cherry shaker step stool in process

This is what it's really about. Making... the world you want to live in. Originally I drafted this page to be a platform for this and other threads about process, society, craft and creativity. In recent days I've been reminded of how this discourse permeates my life, as an individual, a teacher, an artist and community member.

I thought I had a plan. I thought I had a shot at a professional opportunity, but again, for the 4th time I was not the one. And so one must wonder what is one's path? What are the other options? Maybe the thing I've been avoiding, side-stepping, half dedicating my time to over the years is what some might call a calling? I always said "oh I can't do that, it's too complicated." Now, after this past year, two years of transformation and complications, I think that, I feel... I know I can do it. I'm taking this new path, giving over to it, falling in love and dedicating myself to it, to see where it might lead.

First project is an over 14 foot front desk for Funky Door Yoga in Berkeley, CA. They've been a client of mine for almost 10 years and the first piece I put in there is still in use today. This one, the FD-FD is going to be the most complicated piece I've ever attempted! Exciting. I want to use CNC to carve out the table top. It's art, art that gets to be touched and used everyday. I made a model to see how to begin. That part I love. Next up, to the lumber yard to start gather lumber for the top.

Brass and walnut (really ash and baltic birch muli-ply) to match the existing pieces. I'm going to keep track of the process right here. The real build starts on the 19th. I need to try my hand at some CNC in the meantime and I can gather ash and brass. I hope bending brass comes easily. I'd like to make a small piece, test out the characteristics. Wonder if I need to heat it? Questions, discoveries. Never boring.
