Sound-Out is an online radio art station that streams online and intermittently, and briefly in the spring and fall, from the roof of the Western Gallery on the campus of Western Washington University. Sound-Out, partially funded by the Western Gallery through commission, serves as an educational tool and radiophonic space for artists, curators, students and community. If radio stations today are mostly associated with corporate and governmental control, radio art like Sound-Out stands in critical opposition to that dominant paradigm, existing instead as a channel for creative discourse and a platform for environmental reflection, sonic experimentation and community engagement.
